Life of a Farm Dog - Slate

01 — Project details

I grew up on a organic farm in Pennsylvania and this essay I wrote for Slate explored the essential role that dogs played in the culture of our farm. Featuring a Jack Russell named Chuck, I wrote about the ways our dogs offered comfort, distraction, and plenty of practical benefits, like Chuck's achievement of killing a dozen rats in a single afternoon.

While promoting my memoir 'A Farm Dies Once a Year,' published by Holt in 2015, I searched out as many unexpected angles as possible on the reality of life on a farm.
