Farming At the White House - The Atlantic

01 — Project details

Soon after the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009, my father was asked to consult on the First Lady's garden at the White House.

I described the experience in an article for The Atlantic in 2014.

Over the course of that season, we delivered a dump truck of dirt from our own farm in Pennsylvania, planted endless seedlings, and spent hours on everything from harvesting to pest control.

That Christmas, our family met Michelle Obama in her office. It was thrilling and more than a little strange to talk to the First Lady about tomatoes.
